CSAB 2015

The Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India took a policy decision in 2002 to conduct an All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) annually, doing away with many of the large number of entrance examinations that were being conducted till then by various institutes in the country for admission to undergraduate degree programmes in the disciplines of Engineering/Technology and Architecture/ Planning. This initiative has been widely accepted and appreciated.
A Central Counseling Board (CCB) constituted by the Govt. of India coordinated admissions to UG degree programmes in engineering, technology and architecture in respect of selected institutes till 2012. From 2013 onwards, Central Counseling Board (CCB) and All India Engineering Entrance Exam (AIEEE) has been renamed as Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) and JEE (Mains) respectively. The CSAB for 2015 has been constituted with Director, National Institute of Technology Patna, as its Chairman. The Office Memorandum of Ministry of HRD, Govt. of India is placed at OFFICE MEMORANDUM Link.
By the order of Ministry of HRD, there will be joint counselling for IITs/ISM/NITs/IIITs/GFTIs for the academic session 2015-16. Hence, for 31 NITs, 18 IIITs, and 18 other Government Funded Institutes (GFTIs) list displayed on JoSAA website (Josaa.nic.in) will admit candidates on the basis of their category in JEE (Main)-2015 to the first year of Engineering/Technology and Architecture / Planning Programs through a centralized seat allocation procedure, for the academic session 2015-16.
Some Self Financed Technical Institutes (SFTIs), and supernumerary seat for Union Territory list and North East Technical Institutes (NEUT) (list will be displayed on CSAB website shortly) will admit candidates on the basis of their Rank in JEE (Main)-2015 to the first year of Engineering/Technology and Architecture / Planning Programs through a centralized seat allocation procedure, for the academic session 2015-16.
Important features of the admission procedure, fee refund rules, admission schedule, list of Reporting/Help Centers, list of Participating Institutes with total number of seats, fee structure and contact addresses, seat distribution in the Institutes etc., are given in information brochure (will be released soon). Candidates are advised to read information brochure carefully and visit CSAB website regularly for updates and for details regarding the entire online admission process as no postal communication will be used.
In case of any dispute arising out of the seat allocation process at any stage up to the final allocation of institute and/or branch, the decision of Chairman, CSAB-2015 shall be final and binding. The jurisdiction for legal disputes, if any, will be limited to the courts at Patna only.
For smooth functioning of admission procedure resulting into maximum number of candidates getting admission to the course and institute of their choice and minimizing the number of vacant seats, it is advised that the candidates should carefully follow the admission procedure given in information brochure (will be released soon). The procedure offers enough flexibility at every round of allotment and candidates are urged to co-operate by not prolonging their final decision on admission after seat allotment. This will facilitate in catering to the needs of larger number of candidates seeking admission through CSAB-2015.

4th year Engineering student jumps from 7th floor, dies on spot

Reportedly a final year engineering student of Mukesh Patel College of Engineering jumped from the seventh floor of the college on Tuesday evening. No suicide note was found but the incident was captured on CCTV.
College students in the compound heard a thud and as they turned to see what happened they found the body lying in a pool of blood. The students took the boy to the nearby Cooper hospital, where he was declared dead.
Police has registered a case of accidental death. As of now it seems to be a suicide case. Reason behind his death is unknown till now. The police will check the student’s mobile phone records and even examine whether there was any ragging. The boy’s family has been informed.
Amrish Patel, president of Shri Vile Parle Kelvani Mandal that manages the college, said, “The incident has taken place on the college premises, but ragging could not be a reason for the death as we have strict measures in place on the campus and at the hostel.” He said that the college has support systems including counselors to assist students who might suffer stress. “But it seems that Chakravarthi did not seek any help,” Patel said.

No major change in JEE Advanced 2014 format

IITs were trying hard to implement subjective format from 2014 but it will not be implemented from 2014.
Major relief for 2014 IIT JEE aspirants
There will not be many changes in the pattern and format of JEE Advanced 2014 examination
Why IITs are not implementing subjective format:
Having a subjective test for IITs’ entrance exam will require professors to manually evaluate answer papers. For an exam conducted in the first week of June, it is difficult to evaluate answer-sheets of many candidates and to come out with results by June-end. “It will delay the academic session across IITs. To conduct a subjective test for JEE-Advanced, the centre will have to conduct the JEE-Main exam in December and hold the JEE-Advanced in April. It will involve many logistical changes, which is not possible,” said the official. But a final decision on retaining the pattern in next year’s exam will only be taken after the JEE-Advanced 2014 chairman takes over the Joint Admission Board.
IITs might increase the number limit for JEE Advanced from 1.5 Lakhs to 2 Lakhs this year
The board will meet on August 25 to discuss the 2013 exam, their experiences with the new format of a two-level exam and give recommendations for the 2014 exam. “Many officials believe there is no point in bringing about a change in one year. Any new system has to be given an opportunity for two-three years to sustain. In all probability, there will not be many changes this year,” said an official.
IITs may increase the limit of candidates shortlisted from JEE-Main from 1.5 lakhs to two lakhs. “This year, out of 1.5 lakh candidates only 1.19 lakh finally wrote the JEE-Advanced exam. If we increase the limit to two lakhs, we may get the desired 1.5 lakh figure,” said a professor.

How to transfer from one program to another at BITS Pilani

Dual Degree Scheme:
To meet the ambitions of the students who could not get admission to B.E.(Hons.)/B.Pharm.(Hons.) programmes, the Institute has created facilities by which any student who is admitted to M.Sc.(Hons.) programmes is accommodated in a dual degree scheme for a second degree in B.E.(Hons.)/B.Pharm.(Hons.) programmes. This assignment is made by competition on their performance at BITS at the end of first year, separately in Pilani, Goa and Hyderabad campuses.
Transfer from one program to another:
(i) Within the same tier:
It is possible for a student to seek transfer from one programme to another in the middle of a programme without having to start from the beginning.
This is possible because the student is given credit for what he has done till then towards the requirements of the programme to which he seeks the transfer. Details have to be seen in the Academic Regulations.
Transfer is possible from M.E.(all branches) and M.Pharm. to M.Phil. On the other hand, very restricted and tutored transfer would be possible from M.Phil. to M.E./ M.Pharm.
Since admission to a programme is done on assigned and competitive basis, there cannot be any scope of undoing the fact of an assigned admission through transfer. Thus only exceptionally meritorious students in a limited number of cases can expect to compete for transfer to a more sought-after programme. On the other hand, transfer to a less sought-after programme for students who are unable to cope with the rigours of the programme in which they have been admitted would be readily used to rehabilitate them without much loss of time. In any event, transfer must be treated as an admission process.
(ii) From first degree to higher degree/Ph.D. degree:
In the case of bright and promising students of the Integrated First degree programmes a transfer to Higher Degree and/or Ph.D. degree may also be provided.

Who forced the government to rethink about eligibility criteria

Few day back HRD minister said in his reply submitted to Lok Sabha that percentiles are a good measure to check eligibility of any students for IIT admission, but now government is rethinking on that. Who forced the government to rethink about current IIT eligibility criteria.
This rethink has come in wake of a recent admission controversy where 79 aspirants were denied admission to the IITs after getting initial offer as they did not meet the top-20-percentile cut-off marks of their respective schools boards. This year cut off percentage to come under top 20 percentile for AP board students was above 90%. Earlier because of some misunderstanding AP government announced cut off percentage 89.8 but when IITs issued the cut off list after first round of seat allotment, cut off percentage for AP was 91.8%. This yaer 79 students denied admission at last moment
“We don’t want to penalise a student who is so good that he has managed a good rank in the JEE Advance and even got above 80% in Board exams but hasn’t met the 20 percentile cut-off which is in the 90s,” said Gupta explaining the rationale of proposing the rider to the 20 percentile eligibility rule. He, however, ruled out any concession for the 79 students who were denied admission this year.

ISI Kolkata student bags 62 LPA job offer from google

According to surces, a M.Tech student from ISI Kolkata, computer science department has got job offer of 1,00,000 USD from Google. “This is also the highest salary offered to any of our students till date,” says Pradipta Bandyopadhyay, dean of students, ISI.
“We were known for our academic programmes in the international community but now, will be known in the job market too,” Pradipta added.
ISI Placements record – Last year’s highest offer was Rs 28 lakh from Goldman Sachs. ISI has 100 students in Kolkata besides branches in Bangalore, Chennai and Delhi.
“Last year, 43 companies came to our campus and the average was Rs 12 lakh. This year, the average should be around Rs 14 lakh (excluding the international offer) and we expect more than 50 firms,” says a placement official who also added that the minimum salary offer accepted is around Rs 8 lakh for the 2014 batch.
Companies that have visited the ISI campus this year include ICICI, HSBC, Morgan Stanley and Microsoft. Global retailer Walmart will be a first timer and is expected to hire students for its analytics wing for a salary of Rs 15 lakh from the statistical department of ISI.

THE World University Rankings – Panjab university ahead of IITs

For the very first time Panjab university is under top 400 in Times Higher Education World University Rankings and second surprise is that Panjab university is well ahead of old IITs. .
If we look at Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2012, only two indian institutes (IIT Kharagpur and IIT Roorkee) were under top 400, but this year Panjab university has also joined this group and has beat all IITs this time.
“Though the IITs have done well in certain disciplines in other earlier rankings, neither the IITs nor the IIMs are multi-disciplinary institutes. However, that’s no excuse to slip up in these rankings. IITs need to do better by focusing on aspects like research output,” said MM Pallam Raju, Union minister of human resource development, commenting on the IITs faring poorly in the global rankings.

Student gets degree from IIT Bombay after death

A very rare incident happened during convocation 2013 of IIT Bombay. Akshay Dhoke’s degree was received by his father Siddharth Dhoke . You might be thinking that what’s uncommon here. Very first time in history, institute like IITs have awarded degree to any student after death when he didn’t appear for final semester exams.
A brief about Akshay Dhoke:
Akshay, a Nagpur topper in class 10th and 12th, was ranked among the top 200 aspirants in the JEE. A great fan of Rahul Dravid, he also helmed Nagpur cricket team to state level.

Akshay got admission in the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology, Powai in 2009. He was a student of M Tech in Electrical Engineering (dual degree) with speciality in Microelectronics. He was a top scorer there too. His teachers were happy with his academic excellence and his good natured conductr too. Soon he became the blue-eyed boy in the college. When he entered in his final year in the year 2011, he fell ill. His platelate count came down to 09. The related tests confirmed that he was suffering from blood cancer. He was advised Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT)
Unfortunately, Akshay succumbed to his illness on September 14th, 2012.
His story compelled the institute to make an exception
Akshay was a topper throughout his life and he fighted with his death till his last breath.
“I don’t want to caste an aspersion on the doctors at Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital where he was being treated, but Akshay told doctors some things about his disease and humbly suggested some mode of treatment but they did not pay attention to him. They ignored him and said that he was an engineering student and could not know the medical aspect. I personally feel that Akshay was sensible and his grasping power was tremendous. But I do not want to blame anybody. I think Akshay lived a life worth living. We are happy with his stint in this world,” said his father Siddharth Dhoke.
His extraordinary story compelled institute to make an exception. His father, Siddharth Dhoke, a loco-pilot with Central Railways, recieved his dual degree with moist eyes.
Siddharth Dhoke accepted the degree at the hands of Abhay Karandikar, Professor and Head of Department of Electrical Engineering.

IIT Kharagpur will conduct JEE Advanced 2014

IIT Entrance examination 2014 will be organised by Indian institute of technology, Kharagpur (IIT-KGP). ITT JEE 2013 was supposed to be conduct by IIT-KGP, but due to newly introduced pattern JEE Advanced 2013 was organised by IIT Delhi.
The 2013 exam was conducted well on schedule, IIT-Kharagpur will be conducting the 2014 exam.” said JEE-Advanced 2013 chairman HC Gupta from IIT-Delhi.
JEE Advanced 2014 pattern will be same as it was in 2013, IIT entrance will be a two stage process. Top 1.5 lakh students will be filtered out for JEE advanced examination and Merit list will be based on JEE Advanced 2014 scores only with top 20 percentile eligibility criteria

Top 20 percentile eligibility will remain same in 2014

JAB feels that sufficient data was not present against top 20 percentile eligibility rules this year and eligibility criteria should remain same for 2014 too
In 2013 top 20 percentile eligibility criteria was introduced for IIT admission. As per this rule IIT admission will be completely based on JEE Advanced merit score but to get admission student must be under top 20 percentile in their respective XII board examinations too. Because of this top 20 percentile rule IITs rejected admission of 79 students this year. Most of these students were from andhra pradesh boards.
A JAB member said there was not enough data to back the “allegation” that the system was wrong, though there was a proposal to tweak it. “Students who were not selected despite clearing both levels were not eligible as they scored less than the cut-off of their boards. There was no mistake in the system. If there are two consecutive years where we experience a problem and there is data to back the claim, then we might think of revising it,” said the official

IITs may change fee structure again

According to IITs currently a student pays just 7-10 per cent of the actual expenditure on students.Last year IITs increased their fee to 90000 from 50000 for all general category students. In this system 22% SC/ST students are fully waived. Also students whose parental annual income is less than Rs 4.5 lakh, are entitled to a fee-waiver. The remaining 53% students pay the full fee.
Currently IITs get fund from HRD ministry for their expenses such as salaries and staff cost.
Against this backdrop, the IIT council, in its meeting here on September 3, is expected to examine the proposal for a change in the fee payment policy.
A study by IIT Bombay, suggests that all students should pay the fees and those who are exempted from paying fees under government policy should receive the required amount of funds as fee-scholarship through the Direct Benefit Transfer Scheme.

KVPY 2013 – KVPY selection process

What is KVPY
The “Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana” (KVPY) is a program started in 1999 by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India to encourage students of Basic Sciences to take up research careers in Science. The aim of the program is to identify and encourage talented and motivated students to pursue career in research.
This program aims to assist the students to realise their potential and to ensure that the best scientific talent is groomed for research and development in the country. Generous fellowship and contingency grant are provided up to the pre-Ph.D. level to the selected KVPY Fellows. In addition, summer camps for the KVPY Fellows are organized in prestigious research and educational institutions in the country.
The Department of Science and Technology, the nodal agency of the Government has entrusted the overall responsibility for organizing and running the KVPY Program to the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and set up a National Advisory Committee (NAC) for overseeing its implementation. A core committee looks after both the day-to-day and academic aspects of the KVPY Program.

13% IIT Students failed to crack English test

Recently an english proficiency test was conducted by IIT Madras, In this test 106 students out of total 820 students (13%) failed to clear this test. All students are from first year B.Tech and B.Tech (dual) degree courses.
“Every year we conduct an English proficiency test for first year B.Tech and B.Tech (dual) programmes to identify students who have difficulty in English and help them to improve their skills during the course of study,” said Prof K Ramamurthy, dean (academic), Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras
Step ahead:
IIT Madras institute had taken several steps to help students, including a 40-hour special class in the first semester from 5 pm to 7 pm twice a week to help them in English.
“By the end of the first year, all students catch up with English and for those who still want our help, we continue to give them extra coaching,” he added.

JEE Advanced 2014 – What changes can be made by JAB

Reportedly IIT’s Joint Admission Board will meet this weekend to discuss format of JEE Advanced 2013 and then will take final decision for JEE Advanced 2014. The main point to discuss in JEE Advanced format is Eligibility criteria to get admission into IITs.
“We could look into the present criterion of taking only top 20 percentile of successful class XII students from each Board. Till last year the standard class XII cut-off across India was 60%. We could revisit it.” The criterion of top 20 percentile of successful class XII students resulted in wide variation of cut-offs across Boards, said R K Shevgaonkar director of IIT Delhi.
Examination pattern will be almost same

IITs feel that there is no need to look into examination pattern of JEE Advanced that means IITs admission in 2014 will also be a two tier examination. But IITs might increase the number of candidates eligible for JEE Advanced this year.
Exam might be subjective if number of candidate is small.

If the number is small, exam could be subjective. there is a need to re-look at the whole system. For instance, this year only 1.5 lakh students who were successful in JEE (Main) could appear for JEE (Advanced). “Question is should we look at 1.5 lakh students. If number becomes small should we make the examination subjective,” he says.
In IIT JEE 2012 5 lakh students appeared for IIT exam.
Many suggestions are suggested for eligibility criteria, but nothing is finalised yet. One suggestion is to have a fixed cut-off for large Boards and for smaller ones the 20 percentile formula could be used. “IIT Senate that is likely to meet on September 3 would look into the entire gamut of change that can be brought in. But this year’s JEE (Advanced) has thrown few issues that needs to be discussed,” he said.

Approaches to taking the SAT

If you are planning to appear for SAT examination (entrance examination to get admission in United state college) this year, read this carefully.
What are the approaches that you must follow while taking SAT
1. Become familiar with the test. Study the descriptions of the SAT sections, so you’re not surprised or confused on test day.
2. Learn the test directions. The directions for answering the questions in this booklet are the same as those on the actual test. If you become familiar with the directions now, you’ll leave yourself more time to answer the questions when you take the test.
3. Review the sample questions. The more familiar you are with the question formats, the more comfortable you’ll feel when you see similar questions on the actual test. In particular, be sure to practice writing answers to the student-produced response mathematics questions
4. Understand how the tests are scored. You get one point for each right answer and lose a fraction of a point for each wrong answer. You neither gain nor lose points for omitting an answer. Hard questions count the same amount as easier questions
Use These Test-Taking Strategies
1. Listen carefully to instructions and follow the directions given to you. Be sure to fill in the Form Code, Test Form and Test Book Serial Number fields as directed on page 1 of the answer sheet. If they are not correct, we won’t be able to score your test
2. Read carefully. Consider all the choices in each question. Avoid careless mistakes that will cause you to lose points.
3. Answer the easy questions first. Work on less time -consuming questions before moving on to the more difficult ones. Questions in each section are generally ordered from easiest to hardest. The exception is in the passage-based reading questions, which are ordered according to the logic and organization of each passage.
4. Eliminate answer choices that you know are wrong. Cross them out in your test booklet so that you can clearly see which choices are left.
5. Make educated guesses or skip the question. If you have eliminated the choices that you know are wrong, guessing is your best strategy. However, if you cannot eliminate any of the answer choices, it is best to skip the question. You will lose points for incorrect answers. No points are deducted if an answer is left blank.
6. Use your test booklet as scratch paper. Use it to make notes or write down ideas. What you write in the booklet will not affect your score
7. Circle the questions you’ve skipped. This will help you keep track of which questions you’ve skipped.
8. Circle the questions you’ve skipped. This will help you keep track of which questions you’ve skipped.
9. Keep your answer sheet neat. The answer sheet is scored by a machine, which can’t tell the difference between an answer and a doodle. If the machine reads what appear to be two answers for one question, it will consider the question unanswered.
10. Work at an even, steady pace and limit your time on any one question. All questions are worth the same number of points. If you need a lot of time to answer a question, go on to the next one. Later, you may have time to return to the question you skipped. Your goal is to spend time on the questions that you are most likely to answer correctly.
11. Keep track of time. Occasionally check your progress so that you know where you are and how much time is left.
12. Always use a No. 2 pencil. All answer sheet circles must be filled in darkly and completely with a No. 2 pencil. If you need to erase an answer, erase it as completely as possible. The SAT essay must be written with a No. 2 pencil. Essays written in pen will receive a score of zero.
Checklist for SAT Test Day
a. Make sure your calculator is in good working order.
b. You may bring additional batteries and a backup calculator to the test center. Test center staff will not have batteries or calculators for your use.
c. You may not share a calculator with another test-taker
